5 Simple Tips for Organizing Your Seasonal Wardrobe

Frustrating isn’t the word yall! Fall is my favorite season of all, but the struggle is real when it’s time to switch out that seasonal attire. I hear yall hollering sweater and boot season me please in the back but are yall really ready to tackle this wardrobe?!

All it takes is a little planning at the end of each season and setting up some new organizational systems to change the way you feel during this transition. It can shift those low vibrations into a delightful and exciting one each time the season changes.

In our #SeasonalVibes series Part 1, we are sharing 5 Simple Tips for Organizing Your Seasonal Wardrobe to make this an easy, stress-free, and fun process year after year.

1. Store Last Season's Clothing Safely

As a mom of 3 forever growing little men, I have always washed, folded, and inserted Downy April Fresh Fabric Softener sheets in our seasonal clothes before packing them away. First, I skim down on the volume of clothes we have to store by sorting out the clothes that “they” have outgrown or are no longer interested in for donations. I usually stack pile pants in bins on a shelf and fold and roll T-shirts to free up space. Also, items that are too soft to hang stores well like this. For clothing that’s typically on a hanger, we use clear garment bags to store those away. They are inexpensive investments that you can definitely look forward to using year-round. To ensure safekeeping, it is best to store them somewhere cool and dry.

2. Pull the Present Season Out of Storage

Ok yall, now the fun begins!

First up, let’s take a closer look at the present seasonal attire. What do you want to wear? What styles are you over and you don’t want to wear? You’ll work through each grouping one pile at a time, moving quickly. There’s no need to hold up every sweater and reminisce or walk around in those old stilettos just to see if you still can. It’s time to purge!

3. Carefully Organize the Closet Before Filling

Next, you will vacuum or otherwise clean your closet space. It's time to start fresh! I usually organize closets by outdoor temperature and from light colors to dark colors. This will help you find what you need quickly while also providing the visual of a color-coded space. Also, be sure to keep your closet floor as clear as possible. Remember everything has a place and if not, we create one.

4. Add This Season's Clothing to Your Organized Closet (and Dresser)

Bulky sweaters and jeans lend themselves to being folded and placed in dresser drawers verse placed on a hanger. They can make a small closet feel cluttered and tight if your space is limited so let’s try not to do that. For all the other items that you will be hanging, make sure that the size and type of hangers are appropriate for the clothing pieces that they will hang. Such as your heavy coats, lightweight blouses, stylish cardigans, warm cozy scarves, etc.

5. Don't Forget the Accessories

Yesss, boot season me please! All shoeboxes belong on shelves, as do all unboxed shoes and heels, etc. Tall boots should be placed on the floor beneath the main shoe shelves in an orderly fashion. Hats and mittens can easily be stored in bins or baskets.

As you can see, switching out the wardrobe seasonally doesn’t have to be a chore. It promotes mental clarity to be able to walk in the closet and find your favorite sweater and that’s priceless. Now you can go shopping for your new wardrobe. And while you’re at it go ahead and replace the bulbs in your closet with LEDs, if possible. It's way easier to stay organized when you can see exactly what you're doing and what you have. If space allows, hang a full-length mirror inside your closet as well. This will multiply the natural and artificial light while also lending practicality.
